My introduction to Janet Evanovich was her novel The Recovery Agent. That book is of the action/adventure genre I write. It turns out that's only a two-book series by Evanovich. I just read Now or Never. That work by Evanovich is the last entry in a more prolific series of 31—Stephanie Plum Mysteries.
And it’s a hoot.
Stephanie juggles a chaotic slate of fugitives while facing the most serious crossroads of her personal life: she is accidentally engaged to both Joe Morelli and Ranger and may be pregnant, forcing her to finally choose the future she wants.
Stephanie works in Trenton, New Jersey as a bail bondsman bounty hunter. When someone misses a court date, she tracks them down, takes them to the courthouse, and schedules another date.
It’s a job that introduces her to a cast of interesting characters, one of which her partner, Lulu, believes to be a vampire. In reality, he’s a man who has unusually long canines. Although he plays the part by biting women on the neck.
Speaking of Lulu, her remarks are worth a constant stream of chuckles. Lulu is a generously endowed woman and, as she puts it, a former ‘ho.’
As the novel opens, we learn that Stephanie Plum said yes to two proposals: one from cop Joe Morelli and one from security expert Ranger. Around the same time, she slept with both men, and her birth control had expired. Consequently, she fears she might be pregnant and conceals this possibility from both men for most of the book.
Is she or isn’t she?
Read the book.
