Alice ultimately becomes a full investigative partner rather than merely a client or victim: she works with Watson to rescue both her father and Holmes after the kidnappers gain the upper hand. The case broadens into an urgent effort to prevent a bombing at the peace talks, a plot that could reignite international conflict.

The novel’s appeal is its blend of classic Holmesian deduction, turn-of-the-century New York intrigue, political suspense, and an unusually capable historical heroine in Alice Roosevelt.
