The Angel Deception by David Leadbeater

Although David Leadbeater is another author who writes in my action/adventure genre, this is the first novel I’ve read of his. I need to catch up. The Angel Deception is the sixth installment in Leadbeater’s Joe Mason series.

The story follows ex-MI5 operative Joe Mason and his team as they race against time to stop a dangerous satanic cult from obtaining a legendary artifact known as the Hellfire. Supposedly, this artifact holds unimaginable power, and if the cult gains it, they could surpass any government in power, posing a threat to unleash chaos and destruction worldwide.

OK, that’s the synopsis, but the Hellfire turns out to be less than satisfying. However, Leadbeater writes action and fight scenes well. Mason takes his team across Europe, solving clues, one pointing to the next. The bad guys are hot on their trail at each point. Reading the novel, I wonder about my writing. I write clues one pointing to another, but I want the reader to believe these clues are necessary. In The Angel Deception, I wonder why the Satanists went to all that trouble. However, it sets up several well-scripted chase scenes and fights.

Leadbeater does a fine job of building characters that are complex, except for the antagonist Satanist. He is pure evil.

In summary, The Angel Deception is a thriller featuring relentless action, exotic locations, and a race against evil forces determined to wield ultimate power.
