Contempt of Court is the second Charlie Trust legal thriller by Jake Needham, following Habeas Corpus. It continues the story of Charlie Trust, a burned‑out American lawyer drawn back into legal and moral conflict in Southern California in the early 1990s.
In the story, the man lending Charlie his beach house in Malibu has a favor to ask. How can he refuse? After all, the man is lending Charlie a fantastic place on the Pacific next door to Ryan O’Neil and Farrah Fawcett. The favor is to review some documents from a lady friend who's getting a divorce. No problem?
It turns out that the documents, all seven boxes of them, are copies of the husband’s shady business dealings. The husband turns out to be a big-time producer in the television industry, and Charlie quickly finds himself over his head.
Fortunately, he meets a legendary defense attorney who guides Charlie. The attorney is in his eighties and enjoying retirement, but he soon finds out he misses the law, and Charlie becomes an ideal mentee.
There are long passages of legal research and brief preparation, but besides being educational, does not get in the way of intrigue.
