The Apostle Conspiracy by Gary McAvoy is a Vatican thriller with two story arcs. Both of which a prominent role is played by Father Michael Dominic, the Prefect of the Vatican Secret Archives
The first has to do with the shadowy rich tycoon, Elliot Voss. Voss sees an opportunity for immortality in Saint Peter’s bones. The reader must take that at face value since Voss certainly does. He wants to get the saint’s bones to extract the DNA and fuse it with own. Voss has a perfect opportunity in Saint Peter’s bones being put on display in a one-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Of course, he is a leading sponsor of the event, giving him close access.
The second concerns a mysterious inscription that hints at a hidden legacy of Linus, Saint Peter’s first successor, potentially overturning foundational beliefs about Church history. With the help of Vatican archaeologist Marcus Russo, he follows a trail of cryptic clues that reveal Linus as a crucial but obscured architect of Christianity—a truth the Church might not be ready to accept.
The beauty of this thriller is McAvoy’s writing. Rather that action scenes of chases and fistfights, the author shares what the characters are thinking. Their thoughts and mind games propel the plot beautifully.
Recommended.
